“What does it mean to be a woman? What does it mean to be a woman, when I don’t fit into the typical mold of a… pretty woman?”
A comic about the inner conflict between wanting to conform to beauty standards while staying true to one’s values and uniqueness.
Author’s notes:
There is a reference to Spider-man: No Way Home.
Also, why did I only use pencil and not ink for the drawings? Partly it was because of a quote in one of our readings from “The Graphic Novel,” an EC track class. In it, a graphic novel artist, Joe Kubert, was mentioned for his Holocaust-themed work, April 19, 1943: A Story of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. There was something about his creative method that I could relate to:
“Kubert’s intention was to “first pencil then ink” his drawings, but after doing preliminary sketches, he found that there was an ‘immediacy’ in the pencil drawings that was important to retain.”
While creating my comics, I often felt that, when it was time for me to draw over my pencil drawings with a dark ink pen, I would lose the soul and the heart of emotion of the original sketch – the original truth.
