AUA brings together students from over 20 countries, blending diverse cultures with rigorous academics.
Studying abroad provides students with various opportunities to develop greater global awareness and engagement, along with equipping them with open-mindedness to new perspectives on international issues.
Academic research shows that international students often mention benefits associated with studying abroad, such as meeting new friends from different backgrounds, visiting new places, having valuable experiences, and being independent.
ES freshman Nour Al-Deen Nabhan emphasizes the importance of third spaces in fostering social interactions and building connections. “The atmosphere encourages students to socialize at AUA,” he says. Also, he notes that seeking new connections at AUA is easy and genuinely welcomed, helping students to create new friendships.
When it comes to embracing new initiatives and being active in the community, Nour mentions that he appreciates that AUA provides opportunities for students to be creative. When you suggest a project, the university will help you with everything it can,” he continues. The university offers various platforms for international students to engage in multiple activities, such as student clubs, allowing them to integrate into university life.
“AUA is distinguished by its diverse academic teaching methodologies, such as student-led activities,” PG junior student Jessie Klzi says. “I believe having the space to work on our projects with guidance makes a difference when it comes to applicable learning,” she adds. This practice offers flexibility, encourages creative learning styles, and develops invaluable professional skills.
In addition, AUA provides spaces like the student residence to enhance students’ overall experience. “Student residents of AUA, which I cannot thank enough for existing, is a true community itself,” she says. “I think my first year would have been difficult without living with other international students.”
She believes that the AUA student residence is designed to foster a comfortable and inclusive environment, encouraging personal growth, cultural exchange, and lifelong friendships between students.
Regarding the challenges international students tend to encounter at AUA, the language barrier often poses a considerable obstacle, as certain concepts are occasionally explained in Armenian during classes.
“I believe that more efforts could be made to accommodate international students who may not be as fluent in Armenian, particularly in STEM courses,” EC junior Loucine Mazloumian notes.
To address these challenges, mechanisms such as providing supplementary materials in English and fostering peer support groups that encourage collaboration between international and local students could be implemented to help bridge language gaps and enhance the learning experience for all students.
