When Class Turns into a Concert

On Nov. 20, students, faculty members and guests gathered at the Akian Art Gallery for AUA Assistant Professor Dr. Artur Avanesov’s annual end-of-year concert. Every semester, Avanesov gives his students a choice: either write a paper or perform a musical composition. This semester was no exception as the AUA community came together to enjoy music.

The evening started with Dr. Avanesov’s opening remarks, as he greeted the audience.
Dr. Avanesov teaches multiple music-related classes: Music Appreciation, Music Theory, Armenian Music, and Music and Literature. These concerts give Avanesov’s students the opportunity to showcase their musical skills. Some students sing their favorite songs or play compositions, while others come with their composed pieces.

The concert program ranged from Armenian folk songs and classical pieces to jazz, pop, and metal. The piano being a popular instrument choice, students also played the flute, a saxophone, bass, acoustic, and electric guitars. Dr. Avanesov also accompanied some of the performers on the piano, adding his touch to the performances.

Hasmik Varosyan, an ES sophomore, never misses music-related events at AUA. “Everything was organised so well. The students who performed were very talented and prepared,” she said.

One of the performers, Jordan Avetisyan, an EC sophomore, said that having such concerts at university is important. For her performance, she collaborated with her classmate and wrote a poem. Avetisyan accompanied him on the piano with a melody she composed herself.

“I was just glad that there was an opportunity to perform music for others. This was the first time I was performing , which is really nice,” Avetisyan said.

Lusine Torikyan, a freshman DS, found the concert enjoyable. “I think concerts like these are really important, because they not only discover talents beyond academics, but also create a fun and warm atmosphere, helping students take a break from classes,” she said.

Dr. Avanesov’s annual concerts create an engaging and safe environment for talented students to perform in front of an audience, collaborate with each other and connect through music.
