AUA’s Small Businesses Run By Women

Many AUA students develop their passion and innovative ideas into a business aside from their studies and academic life. It allows students to gain experience and enhance their skills in different areas. Students mostly learn to become more responsible and understand that their success or failure solely depends on them.

A few hard-working female students at AUA are hoping to encourage other young female entrepreneurs to follow their passion.

Anahit Topalyan, EC junior, and Natela Azoyan, DS sophomore, decided to pursue their dream and start an e-commerce business together. Their business, Syzygy, is focused on selling jewelry, particularly earrings. Syzygy, the name of their business, in Astronomical terms, occurs when the Sun and Moon are in alignment.

“Our love towards accessories brought us together to make jewelry into a small profitable business,” said Anahit. According to her, running their business never interferes with their academic life. Having a great partner in building a business and good time-management skills are crucial.

Syzygy’s social media platform is extremely engaging and active to attract customers. Natela and Anahit worked with a business planner and came up with the idea of having a specific schedule for Syzygy to increase customer engagement by implementing a number of digital marketing strategies. “Building the aesthetics of feed and posts on social media platforms, daily stories, orders, and hosting different collaboration meetings are a huge part of what we have now,” they explain.

Natela suggested that future students-entrepreneurs focus on their passion and take risks to achieve their goals. Fortunately, their business did not fail during the pandemic and even benefited since they were able to put their time into growing the business productively. They found the summer break to be particularly beneficial since it allowed them to refine their idea, work out any defects, and sell their product successfully.

Another AUA student, Inesa Gasparyan, EC junior, is the head of one of the toy shops in Armenia named “My Toy.” Inesa has been interested in this field since she was 13 years old as she gained passion seeing her father working hard in this industry. As she became an adult, Inesa decided to run one of the company’s branches.

When asked how she manages to keep up with so much work and studies, she replied, “Yes, it is challenging to collaborate work with studies, but at the same time, everything is possible with the proper dedication.”

To future young entrepreneurs, Inesa suggests going ahead with the developed ideas without any doubts. She said, “Do not forget to do some risk management. Calculate what might go wrong carefully and just go for it because there is no better time to implement your ideas than now.”

These stories show that with the right determination and motivation, despite the challenges in the business world, students, along with their classes, are able to succeed in running their small businesses.
