Water, Once ice

By Lilit Poghosyan

A little girl sauntering down the street

Met a little boy from the other side of the road

And momentary happiness inflamed four eyes

“She is happy,” he said

“I am happy,” said she

But something lowered the lips of the little boy

He admitted the pain out of him in a shapeshifting smile

And kissed the lips of the little girl that came from his dusk

“Isn’t she beautiful,” said he

“I am beautiful,” said she

They are happy, and then their hands touched in the dark

This caused uneasiness in my little guy

He pressed his eyes to hide the truth

And opened his mouth to lie for his good

“Oops,” said she

“Sorry,” he said

And something appeared in the eyes of the boy

It found its way down on his shoes

He lowered his head and said dolefully

“I don’t know you”
